I Broke My Netflix Habit for Avatar... in 3D

Winter has been wicked in the Northeast. It seems that every minute I look out window there's white stuff falling, and lots of it. My usual response to lots of snow is to stock up on lots of popcorn and hot chocolate, pop in a DVD, and enjoy what Netflix delivers to my home.  So for my wife (a native Floridian) and I to venture out in the cold slush, we needed a pretty good reason.

I admit that I'm a fan of sci fi flicks, but usually a rerun of Alien or Star Wars on TV is enough to keep me glued. I'm not the kind of guy who stands in line to be the first to see a new movie.  But there was something about the buzz for the movie Avatar that was different.  It seemed that every pundit was gushing over this movie in 3D. There was something different about this picture compared to every other attempt at using the 3rd dimension. So I went online to Fandango and ordered 2 tix for an Imax showing of Avatar.

Let me tell you something, the critics were right. I read the Wall Street Journal, and their movie reviews are usually spot on. One of the points in Joe Morgenstern's review that caught my attention was the subtle use of 3D in this movie, and I agree.

Avatar is immersive. Once the film rolls you are inside the experience. It's incredible. I was most amazed by the use of 3D to give depth to things like atmospheric conditions, and insects buzzing around. It's not a cartoon. You know that they had to use CGI (Computer Generated Imagery), but the integration of motion capture and other technologies to create this world is worth every nickel of the premium tickets.

So from this couch potato, five thumbs up. Even my wife was talking about it for days afterword, and she's not a fan of Klingons, Wookies, or other alien story lines.

Even if you don't get to see the movie in 3D, check out this making of Avatar video. It, too, is pretty amazing.
